Dear adnen

Last week, thousands of you put your names to a petition calling on the G-8 leaders to make concrete commitments to bringing peace to Darfur

Human Rights First and our partner organizations in G8 countries delivered the petition to governments in all G-8 capital cities. Click here to see photos

http://www.slide.com/r/cXoQTfbW4z85XdAVKwU2VIe3SpviLVng?previous_view=mscd_embedded_url&view=original The G8 statement on Darfur that came out today called for full deployment of the peacekeeping force, a recommitment to the peace process, and implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement between North and South Sudan.

But it's not nearly enough

The G-8 made no specific mention of continued violations of the U.N. Security Council arms embargo on Darfur.  And some G-8 members and their powerful friends are still transferring arms to Sudan, arms that provide the firepower for outrageous acts like today's killing of U.N. peacekeepers by Janjaweed militias. They also show Khartoum that the world's most powerful countries are not fully committed to stopping its atrocities in Darfur

G8 leaders attending the Beijing Olympics next month should raise the issue of China's military support to Sudan while they are in Beijing.  Several G-8 members are also U.N. Security Council members, and they should force a resolution to strengthen the arms embargo, forcing China and Russia show their cards

We will be calling on you to help pressure leaders to take these steps. So stay tuned

Thank you
